Residential leads U.S. construction spending

According to an analysis by the Associated General Contractors of America, U.S. construction spending increased 0.6% from February to March, with gains in residential construction and data center-related projects. Residential construction spending rose 3.6% compared with a year earlier, including a 2.7% monthly increase in single-family construction. Total construction spending reached a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $2.186 trillion in March, up 1.6% from March 2025. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, both the U.S. labor market and construction job market continued to show resilience for two consecutive months. Employment in the overall construction sector rose by 9,000 jobs in April. Residential construction employment now stands at 3.3 million in April, including 927,000 workers employed by builders and remodelers and nearly 2.4 million residential specialty trade contractors. Existing home sales rise

New data from April 2026 reported existing-home sales increased by 0.2%. While a slight increase, this rebound from March’s nine-month low exhibits signs of a balancing market. The average sales price of existing homes increased 0.9% from the previous year at $417,700. Regionally, the Midwest and South saw the most increase at +2.2% and +0.5% respectively.
