The design team from Neil Kelly remodeled a kitchen in Gresham, transforming its outdated design into a more contemporary one that balances with transitional warmth. Tawni Peterson from NK worked as the Design Consultant on the project, leading a team also from NK. The clients knew they wanted to remodel the kitchen when they originally moved into the home a few years ago, envisioning a more open and airy kitchen.
The team faced structural challenges during the initial walkthrough, noting that the existing vertical stick framing was not adequate to support the current load and could not accommodate the remodel. Peterson and her team strategically found a solution without overwhelming the clients’ budget, revising the west-facing exterior wall and adding fixed picture windows within the existing vertical framing, reducing the need for structural reinforcement while still adhering to the clients’ desire for natural light. Vaulting the ceiling expanded the scale of the room and brought in more light. Adding a central island improved functionality while a custom butler’s pantry provided convenience and an elevation to everyday living.
